Black Futsu (Cucurbita moschata)
105 days. Small flavourful squash has dense orange flesh with a hint of hazelnut. These little squash were popular in Japan during the Edo period (1603-1867) and are making something of a comeback today. Dark green, deeply ridged fruit turn a deep burnt orange colour in storage. Perfect size for two people for dinner. We like to make gnocchi or ravioli with this one. Rare. Seed is in short supply this season so we are offering 15 seeds per pkt. We plan to build up our seed supply during the 2010 season. Pkt. 15 seeds.
Buttercup, Burgess Strain (Cucurbita maxima)
95 days. The standard buttercup squash. Dark green, blocky with a gray button on the blossom end. The medium-small, 3-5 lb fruits have deep orange, fiberless flesh with a rich, sweet flavour. A northern New England favorite. Average yield of 3-4 fruits per plant.
Delicata (Cucurbita pepo)
100 days. Sweet potatoes for the north. This little squash was bred to provide sweet, smooth, orange flesh for baking, roasting or stuffing. Productive plants average 5 - 7 fruit per plant.
Long Island Cheese
Cucurbita moschata. 108 days Large, flattened, tan-coloured pumpkins resemble a giant wheel of cheese. This Long Island heirloom has traditionally been used for pies or decoration. The flesh is orange and moderately sweet. Stores well. Vining plants produce an average of two fruits. We start them indoors in peat pots and plant pot and all when the soil warms in spring.
Red Kuri (Cucurbita maxima)
92 days. Orange-red, teardrop-shaped squash have a sweet flavour and smooth, dry flesh. Plants produce 2-3 kg. fruit that ripen even in short season gardens. Has lots of eye appeal and is great for market. Also known as Baby Red Hubbard or Orange Hokkaido. Very high in beta-carotene.
Waltham Butternut (Cucurbita moschata)
105 days. The standard butternut. Light tan-coloured winter squash with small seed cavities and thick cylindrical necks without crooks. Uniform fruits average 9” long and average 4 - 5 lbs. The flesh is smooth textured and has a unique sweet flavour, particularly after 2 months storage. Average yield of 4 - 5 fruits per plant.back to top
