Beets
Beta vulgaris | Pkt. $3.00 | approx. 150 seeds
Bulls Blood
35 days baby leaf, 55 days roots. An heirloom beet that is grown predominantly for its tasty, burgundy coloured leaves. Provides salad greens even when light conditions are low. The small sweet roots have pink and red zoning and are beautiful sliced in salads.
Chioggia Guardsmark
55 days. Improved version of the colourful candy-striped heirloom beet from Italy. Concentric rings of pink and white in a round, slightly flattened beet. This selection by the Alf Christianson Seed Company is more uniform and has improved tolerance to bolting to seed. Sweet and peppery flavour. Very showy and great for market.
Cylindra
54 days. Elongated reddish/purple beets are easy to slice into uniform pieces for cooking or canning. A favourite of many chefs. Leafy tops can be cooked and make beautiful bunches for market. Cylindrical beets tend to push up out of the soil as they grow so cover the exposed shoulders with soil to keep them smooth. Has resistance to scab and cercospora.
Detroit Dark Red
50 days. This dark red, round beet is our best storage beet. Roots are sweet, uniform and reach 8 cm when mature. Tops are green, streaked with red and are good in salads or braised. Bulk packet available: $4.25 25 g (approx. 1130 seeds)
Early Wonder Tall Top
45 days. These early bunching beets can be harvested young with tops attached for bunched baby beets. Large, bright green, red-veined leaves are also great as early salad greens. Slightly flattened beets are dark red and sweet. Sow every few weeks for a continuous supply.
Touchstone Golden Beet
55 days. Another improved selection by the Alf Chistianson Seed Company. Touchstone was selected for higher germination rates and the bright yellow roots hold their colour even when cooked. The flavour is sweet and milder than red beets. Solid green tops are more vigorous than other yellow beet tops which makes nice looking bunches for market.back to top
